Off To The Presses

Off To The Presses

When we started this thing in August we wanted to share great music and restore people’s faith in good Hip-Hop. Arguably we’ve done both of those quite well so far and have learnt alot while doing it, however, we’re taking Chali 2na’s advice and stepping our game up.

That might sound weird considering the blog has started to slow down over the past few weeks but for good reason – we’re going to the presses and producing the first issue of Lesson Six. We’ve got a lot lined up for the magazine including interviews with great people and more reviews than you could shake a stick at. All stuff we’ll be letting you know on the run up to the day we send it to the printers – the 19th of April where issues will be available shortly after. We’ve still got a lot to do so bare with us over the next few weeks as the work increases but come the end of the month you’ll be able to see the fruits of our labour in physical form.

Oh, and we’re not trying to stay ahead of the game by doing this a day early…

If you would like to get involved with Issue One of Lesson Six, whether that be in the form of writing, illustrating or just an artist wanting to get the name out, contact us at staff@lessonsix.com

“Pain on Black” by Raashan Ahmad

It was incredibly disappointing to not have spent more time with Raashan Ahmad’s For What You’ve Lost last year. It undoubtedly would have clocked high in our Best of 2010 Albums. Fortunately Raashan has been busy with videos, with this video for “Pain on Black” being the third (unless we missed one), from that great album released at the end of last year. If you don’t know, now you know. Get on it.

Shad Wins Juno & Releases Free Track At The Same Time

Shad Wins Juno & Releases Free Track At The Same Time

Over the weekend Shad beat out Drake, D-Sisive and other Canadian artists for rap album of the year at this year’s Juno Awards. This can only go down as a win for good music as Shad’s TSOL beat the mainstream favourite Drake. I’m sure this will take pride and place next to his Sixie (We don’t call them that) for Album of the Year 2010.

Anyway, to say thanks to his fans Shad released the Kanye-esque “Give You All I Can” for free.

“Looking Back” by CunninLynguists

An acoustically played track by CynninLynguists from their new album. Hopefully something they pursue more as acoustic hip-hop albums are a rarity nowadays and they’ve kind of a natural fit.

Ghostpoet Album Launch

Ghostpoet just put out a short video filmed at his album launch filled with live footage and an interview with the man himself. It’s good to get these kind of interviews with up and coming artists, especially ones with debut albums as good as Ghostpoet’s.

On The Horizon: March Update

Another month goes past and more release dates have been announced and we’re back with another list of what you should be putting on your radar. Hopefully people are finding these lists useful, as it’s stupidly tough to get updated lists of these dates.

“Silent Protest” by Open Mike Eagle

Open Mike Eagle gets open on protests for the Promoteus mixtape recently released. Maybe a sign of things to come with his upcoming album, Rappers Die of Natural Causes due for release soon.

“Extra Track 2″ by Bullfrog & Kid Koala

An appropriately weird video for a strange track.

“Boiler Makers” by Planet Asia

For all of Madlib’s clichéd weed promoting & strange characters like Quasimoto, I’m strangely hooked on his experimental production. Here Planet Asia rap over the most laid-back beat you’re likely to hear today.

“Equilibré” by Hocus Pocus

I’ve never really dabbled with any kind of foreign language hip-hop but when the beats are this good, I’m starting to wonder why. Not that this is purely about the beats, the rhyming and wordplay is still impressive despite being in a language I don’t understand. Slightly weird that one. Anyway here’s Hocus Pocus with “Equilibré” or “Balance” if you want your French Hip-Hop track titles to be in English.
