Best of 2012: Tracks of the Year
So here it is. Our final part of our Best of 2012 coverage concludes with our top 50 tracks of the year. I’ll avoid the clichés, but this has been a tough list to put together and a special thanks to everyone who produced great music throughout the year for making it tough. It’s been fun.
We’ve still got our guestlists for 2012, which will be coming up each day this week and then we’ll be returning to regular goodness. But for now, enjoy the end of the year with our Top 50 Tracks of 2012.

Can I Kickstart it?
Hip-Hop is cheap. Financially at least. It’s the reason that at least in terms of quantity, hip-hop is king. Even if that means the majority of cases end up compromising in quality and don’t quite do the genre credit. But, the fact that all you need is a beat and a microphone, in it’s rawest form, is the reason we love it.
However, thanks to the social crowd funding website Kickstarter, we’re starting to see a slate of artists target funding for their latest projects. With the UK now getting access to start campaigns, and not simply fund them, we look at site’s influence on the genre so far and wonder are we just making glorified pre-orders?
Great free download here by way of Modern Shark. Bi-Polar Bear & Junk Science combine on one of the better tracks off the Kickstarter funded When Ledge Is Home.
Like all good Kickstarter campaigns, Bi-Polar Bear’s was quickly achieved. I’ve been listening to the advance that donors got their ears around for helping out and it’s one to wait for, ahead of it’s 18th of September release. In the meantime, watch the hijinks of a guy wearing the head polar bear costume.
Long time followers of the blog will probably be aware of our, frankly, fanboy love for the guys over at Modern Shark. That’s why we’re giving you a nudge, and showing our support, for the Bi-Polar Bear project going on over at Kickstarter. Their new album, entitled “When Ledge Is Home” features guest spots by Junk Science & Blue Sky Black Death and has already reached it’s goal in funding. But you know how these things go, you give a little, you get a lot (and a warm feeling of pledging towards dope projects like this) so the more funding they get the better it is for everyone. So watch the charismatic video above and jump over to the project page on Kickstarter.
Over the past year, one of our favourite labels, Modern Shark have been putting out free samplers packed with tracks from top artists like Junk Science, Serengeti, Cool Calm Pete and more. Number three is here, and it’s probably the pick of the bunch. If you like your rap strange but well produced, this is one you won’t want to miss.
