This week the UK’s Matt Ford, aka DJ Format, will release his first album in nearly seven years. Statement of Intent, the long awaited follow up to 2005′s If You Can’t Join ‘em, Beat ‘em is set to feature DJ Format’s incredibly strong boom-bap production while also giving great independent rappers a great platform to be heard. For those unfortunate enough to have missed the first two albums in the mid-naughties, here are DJ Format’s Essentials.

Essentials: DJ Format
A quick teaser for the long awaited 3rd DJ Format album, Statement of Intent. While it hasn’t been announced that, personal favourite and frequent collaborator, Abdominal will feature, it does include the UK’s DJ Format collaborating with Edan, Mr. Life, Sureshot La Rock, Phill Most Chill and more. This is the first we’ve heard about a follow up to 2005 album, If You Can’t Join ‘em, Beat ‘em, since he dropped the Mr.DJ/Dope Pusher EP nearly a whole year ago. The Best of 2011: Tracks of the Year (30-21)
We continue our countdown of the top 50 tracks of 2011 with those just outside the top 20.
Well this was a pleasant surprise if there ever was one. UK’s own DJ Format, producer who gave starts to D-Sisive, Abdominal while also working with members of Jurassic 5, has released new material in “Dope Pusher/Here Comes The Dope Pusher”. Big Daddy Kane samples & a distinctly old school feel means this is all we could have wished for and more. You should probably check out the instrumental B-side while you’re at it as well.
It’s been publicised that he’s been working on a 3rd album for a long time now, could this be a sign of things to come? It has been six long years since we last laid ears into a new DJ Format solo album, let’s hope that changes soon.
It’s funny how one line can trigger a playlist:
“We should rap about things that we like / Like food?”
This came about by accident when I was gorging myself on food and a few beers one night and listening to some PUTS. It occurred to me that hip-hop is one of the few genres of music where artists can do just that, rap about any subject as long as the content is clever and/or amusing and the beats are good.
