Tracks about video games play a risky game but self-confessed nerd rappers Open Mike Eagle & Milo lend themselves well to the subject on “Boss Fight”. The track, off Open Mike’s recently released free Rent Party Extension EP, features an organic sounding collaboration taking turns reminiscing about their favourite past-time over the kind of dirty-sounding synth that Milo feels at home on. Bleeps & electronic vocals pepper the beat while both throw off Rez & Final Fight references like it’s nothing. Highly anticipating anything these guys together in the future.

Our favourite genre-justifying nerd rapper, Milo, has left us waiting for the follow up, to the excellent I Wish My Brother Rob Was Here, ever since we finished listening to “Bill Murray’s Prayer”. His 2nd mixtape, using production by Baths, is appropriately titled Milo Takes Baths has just seen the light of day. Milo takes his autobiographical lyrics to an entirely new level here, picking excellently curated beats by Anitcon’s Baths. There is a reason we gave Milo’s last mixtape such high praise and yet Milo Takes Baths somehow manages to live up to that high bar. Just download it already.

We kick off our final week of Best of 2011 coverage with our Top 10 Free Downloads of the Year.
They’re a relatively young group of rappers.
That’s pretty much all the Whethermen have in common with strange internet sensation, OFWGKTA. So seeing as we’re not into rape that much, we’re siding with nerdy and intellectual Whethermen. We’ve already raved about highly quotable rapper, Milo, but the other day we got sent through an email from Safari Al. The singer/rapper has just released his first mixtape, Hermitage Academy, and I’m not going to lie, it’s pretty damn good. Highly recommended, and these are definitely, ones to look out for in 2012.

Before we move onto our albums and free downloadable of the year (along with a few guestlists), we’ve got the little matter of our top 10 tracks of 2011.
I’ve spent a majority of the last few weeks listening to Milo’s recently released mixtape “I Wish My Brother Rob was Here”. Despite only being 19 years old, Milo seems very fluent and well thought out when on the mic. We’ve recently had a chance to sit down and talk with Milo as a new up and coming artist, to learn a little bit about him.

Introducing… Milo
A few weeks back I got an email that at one point read “I feel hip-hop has betrayed it’s nerdier fanbase”. One listen to Milo’s, criminally good for a 1st mixtape release, “I Wish My Brother Rob Was Here” and you’ll find it tough to argue. So many quotables, clearly made points and well procured beats meant that it’s easily my contender for free download of the year, impressive for what is Milo’s first release. But just incase you didn’t get a sense of the man himself, which is tough considering how genuine he comes across, we asked him those important six questions.
